Q: How much does counseling cost?
A: The initial assessment is a 90 minute session and is $175.00. In this session paperwork is completed, covered, and we begin with you telling your story. Following the initial session, all one-hour sessions are $125.00. Extended sessions are also offered as follows: 75 minutes: $150; 90 minutes: $175.00. All payment is in full and upfront. Payment for the initial session is required in form of cash or check at time of the session. After a relationship has been established, clients may pay using their online banking system or credit card both via PayPal. Use the Payments page on this site to pay with PayPal. Insurance claims are filed by the client after diagnosis is made by the therapist. Reimbursement is made by insurance company directly to the client. Not all insurance companies cover mental health. Not all diagnoses are covered by all insurance companies. You will want to discuss this further with both your insurance company and with the therapist in the initial session. There are times when a Hardship Agreement can be reached if an already existing client comes upon true financial hardship. This is contracted for a period of time and re-evaluated frequently.
Q: How long does counseling last?
A: Everyone is different and different issues take different lengths of time. I always encourage people to commit to 6 months at least, and 18 months on average, depending on how frequently and consistently counseling is attended. Growth in counseling is about momentum. The more frequently you come, the more progress you will make. I strongly encourage clients to commit to once a week for the first 4 weeks, and after this, if a lesser frequency is necessary due to funds or scheduling, then this can be discussed. A lot of folks work through their intense work weekly, then drop to bi-weekly, then monthly until termination. Often clients return periodically for "check-ups" or like to check in for maintenance. There are some issues that require a shorter period of time, however these issues are generally circumstantial and not considered issues from your past or from an ongoing conflict in a relationship.
Q: How does counseling work?
A: We schedule an initial 90 minute evaluation and you commit to come at least once a week for a 60 minute session for 4-6 weeks, allowing both of us to form an idea of what is at the root of your issues and begin to develop a bond and a base for a good working therapeutic relationship. After those initial weeks, we can discuss any changes to the way our meetings are going and we both give input on whether or not our match is a good fit. This also provides an opportunity for the therapist to determine if an additional referral is indicated outside of these counseling sessions.
Q: What do I need to do first?
A: Call my cell (615) 812-4134 and leave your phone number and a good time to call you back. You may also indicate what days/times of the week are good for you to come in. I am in the office Tues, Wed and Thurs. At times, I will schedule on a Monday or Friday if necessary. Please leave a number where it is safe to leave a message, where your privacy is ensured. You will receive a call back within 24 business hours to schedule the initial session. NOTE: I DO NOT SET APPS OR MAKE SCHEDULE CHANGES BY EMAIL.
Q: Who do you like to work with and what kinds of problems do you treat?
A: I enjoy working with a variety of issues and client types. I do a lot of individual work related to family of origin and ongoing family systems. See my home page to see a complete list of issues I work with. I enjoy working with both males and females. Since I'm a Christian, Christians prefer seeing me. I have a long history of working with people who have been sexually abused at some point in their life. I am very experienced with grief/loss issues. I am ready to help whenever there are issues in life that someone is struggling to adjust to, either with mild depression, anxiety or behavior. Here are some kinds of work I won't do: I don't work with children under the age of 13. I also refer issues that involve domestic violence that is ongoing. I am also not an addictions specialist, although a certain amount of addictions work is involved in a lot of counseling and I work a lot with people who have this as a secondary problem. However, I am not a certified addictions counselor. Nor am I a certified sex therapist, although a great deal of issues related to sexuality are closely tied to a lot of the work that I do, whether it is connected to marriage work, or to past abuse issues or personal struggles. I am not a psychiatrist and do not prescribe medications, although I have a basic knowledge of the impact most psychotropic medicines are to have on the person's mood. I work closely with any psychiatrist to whom I may refer you if medication becomes indicated. I have experience working in group homes, partial day programs, foster care, home based work and psychiatric hospitals. I have seen the worst of the worst, and know what it looks like when someone is in need of more intense care than I can provide.
